One of the most meaningful parts of our Arts Program is seeing the impact that a simple letter or drawing can have on a child facing cancer🖼️💛

Recently, Broly’s mom shared this message with us:

“Broly absolutely loves receiving his letters. They have helped him realize just how loved and supported he truly is. Every single volunteer goes above and beyond with so much kindness and compassion.

Some take the time to write him the sweetest, most encouraging letters, while others spend so much time creating incredible drawings of his favorite characters. The love and effort put into each piece of mail is truly amazing.

These letters have brought so much joy to Broly during one of the hardest seasons of his life, and they have meant just as much to me as his mom. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to every volunteer and to everyone at Cancer Kids First for making him smile and reminding him that so many people are cheering him on. We are beyond grateful for all that you do.”

On May 29, through our Patient Interaction Program, we hosted a special dinner in New York City connecting 9-year-old leukemia patient Myrah with content creator @sydneyschiffer at @bubbys .🗽🍽️

Myrah and Sydney quickly bonded over their shared interest in creating videos, chatting about everything from their favorite music artists to content creation. What started as dinner became an opportunity for connection, laughter, and friendship.

Our Patient Interaction Program is designed to help pediatric cancer patients build meaningful relationships with peers and mentors, reducing the social isolation that can often come with treatment. By creating experiences centered around connection, we hope to bring moments of normalcy, confidence, and joy to children facing cancer.

We’re especially grateful for partners like Sydney, who generously donate their time to spend one-on-one with our patients. These experiences leave a lasting impact and remind our kids that they are supported by a community that truly cares. 💛

This past weekend, Cancer Kids First hosted our very first conference, themed YOUth Can Change the World—and what a powerful beginning it was. 🌎🕊️🎗️

Over two days, ~100 young changemakers from across the United States and around the world, including Romania, Ukraine, and the Philippines, came together to learn, connect, and explore what it means to create impact. Attendees were challenged to think bigger about the change they can create in their communities and beyond, aligning with our nonprofit’s belief that young people have the power to lead, serve, and shape the future.

What made this conference special was that service was ingrained not only into the speaker topics but also into the activities. On May 30th, participants gathered at Columbia to listen to a Women Breaking Barriers panel—featuring all women of color, fireside chats on environmental justice and global health leadership, and more. On May 31st, workshops were organized at the Harlem State Office Building to engage students in forward-thinking activities with themes like “How to Build a Nonprofit from the Ground Up” (ft. @imermanangels) and “Confidence and Positivity” (ft. @meganmillion100). In between panels, attendees created cards for kids with cancer under our Arts program. Simultaneously, CKF raised funds to create care packages for patients at @nyulangone and @cohen_childrens. We closed off with a networking brunch for speakers and attendees, designed to ensure long-lasting relationships were the biggest takeaway.

Six years ago, Cancer Kids First started with one teenager, one laptop, and one goal: making sure no child fights cancer alone.

At 14 years old, our founder Olivia Zhang began creating cards and care packages for pediatric cancer patients from her bedroom. Today, Cancer Kids First has grown into the world’s largest youth-led cancer nonprofit, with 43,000+ volunteers across 80 countries supporting thousands of children and families through treatment, creativity, and human connection. 💛

Our work in Uganda reminded us why this mission is so urgent 🇺🇬

Through one of our incredible CKF volunteers Moesha (@_mbxxo), we reached nearly 90 pediatric cancer patients at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital this week. Moesha helped deliver 100 care packages, with additional supplies left behind for incoming patients throughout the week.

Each care package was thoughtfully designed to support both physical and emotional well-being. Kits included essentials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, wipes, tissues, and towels, along with comfort items like blankets and teddy bears, and educational activities such as coloring books and crayons to bring moments of joy during treatment.

As with every hospital dropoff, we learned more about the cancer landscape.

The head doctor shared that while access to treatment is already limited, what’s often overlooked is the lack of psychosocial and emotional support for children battling cancer. Many patients face not only the physical toll of the disease, but also fear, isolation, and a lack of resources to support their mental well-being during treatment.

Globally, hundreds of thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer each year—yet in low- and middle-income countries, survival rates can be as low as 20%, compared to over 80% in higher-income countries. The gap needs to be closed through increased access and support systems. This is why CKF’s Treatment Services Program exists.

This is what youth-led impact looks like.

And we’re just getting started.

Founded in 2019, CKF has grown into the world’s largest youth-led childhood cancer nonprofit—with 43,000 volunteers across 80 countries supporting 15,000 patients in 22 countries.

This is not an honorary title.

The CEO is responsible for: • Strategy and organizational direction • Leading a global leadership team • Fundraising and partnerships • Program oversight and quality • Protecting the integrity of our mission

This is a 15–20 hour per week leadership role with high accountability and real responsibility.

The selected candidate will train under our Founder and current CEO, @oliviazhangofficial , for one year before formally stepping into the role in Summer 2027.

This year, we leaned into what makes CKF different. We refined our mission, focused on just three core programs, and centered everything we do around meaningful, human connection. From hosting 27 patient interaction events to expanding internationally, our youth-for-youth model continued to prove that young people can lead real change.

We also celebrated major milestones, from our rebrand and strengthened partnerships with institutions like the Florida Aquarium and Toronto Zoo, to founder recognitions that reminded us how far this movement has come. Most importantly, we showed up, for patients, families, and one another.

Born in McLean, Virginia, CKF traveled over 4,700 miles this year to reach patients around the world, with our fastest growth in Brazil. 🌍

None of this happens without our volunteers, chapter leaders, partners, donors, and supporters who choose, again and again, to believe in kids helping kids.
